What Is Drug Abuse And What Are The Reasons Behind It?
The question 'what is drug abuse' can be answered in social, medical and legal terms. In legal terms, the illegal use of any drug is drug abuse. Medically speaking, the use of medicines in a non-prescribed manner can be termed as drug abuse. Socially, using certain drugs that are not generally accepted by society or using acceptable drugs in a manner that is unacceptable or looked down upon in society is termed as abuse of drugs. The signs of drug abuse could either be glaringly obvious or well hidden in certain cases. Recognition of these signs is important to prevent a person from denial or to help a person who is in denial of his or her problem.
Reasons For Drug Abuse
It is very difficult to give a definite answer to the question, what is the cause of drug abuse? The reasons for drug abuse could be varied and may include an attempt to escape from reality, to lighten one's burdens, to escape from certain physical or mental deficits, to mask pain, to fight depression and many more. Some people experiment with drugs just for the thrill until it leads to habit formation and some do it just to fit in with the crowd. Most recent drug abuse statistics reveal an increased usage of drugs among teenagers. These surveys are alarming due to the implications that it reflects by way of loss of productivity of teenagers, increased costs due to de-addiction programs and increased health risks.
Drug Abuse Among The Rich And Famous
Two of the very glaring examples of drug abuse in the entertainment industry are Drew Barrymore and her drug abuse and Chris Farley. Drew Barrymore, who was born into an acting dynasty, had a very disturbed childhood which prompted her to seek solace in alcohol and drugs at a very young and tender age. After repeated de-addiction programs, Drew Barrymore drug abuse problem seem to have lessened in intensity. Chris Farley, who died of drug abuse at the age of 33, was a very famous comic actor. Drug abuse by Chris Farley has led to the creation of Chris Farley foundation which educates people about the ill effects of substance abuse. Bill Moyers special on history of drug abuse on PBS has been an effective program aired on PBS about substance abuse and recovery.
